The workshop focused on structural systems with emphasis on bridges and buildings. The main intent of the workshop was to address practical ideas that can be implemented in the short term, to identify research needs and to suggest some specific directions to follow. The US NSF, through its Division of International Programs, encourages and supports cooperation between US and foreign scientists.
Dr. Khaled Soudki, Dean of School of Engineering at AUD commented:
"We are thankful to the NSF that agreed on hosting such an important workshop for Civil Engineers in the area. The region is witnessing profound changes especially in civil engineering infrastructure systems, and hence it is crucial that countries exchange information and experience for the benefit of their communities."
Issues that were discussed included high performance materials, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, high performance concrete, high strength steel, monitoring, diagnosis/assessment and management of infrastructure systems.
The two-day workshop was sponsored by major regional & international educational institutions and civil infrastructure developers that included AUD, University of Kentucky - USA, NSF, Society of Engineers - UAE, Dubai Municipality, Nakheel, Emaar, Fosroc, Unibeton Ready Mix and Elkem Materials.
