Syria signs up US exploration firm

Syria has signed a $127m gas and oil exploration agreement with US-based Marathon Oil, according to Syria's official news agency SANA. Under the 25-year deal, Marathon Oil will develop oil and gas fields, Al Shae'r and Al Sharyfah, 162 km north-west of Damascus. Marathon hopes to extract 2m cubic metres of gas and 5,000 barrels of oil per day.
