This latest development is part of an ambitious transport strategy for an Intelligent Transport System, which will integrate buses, ferries, the Metro and taxis, and will be implemented in Dubai over the next two years.

The new CITARO buses have been specially designed by Mercedes Benz to deliver cutting edge technology and luxury. In keeping with tradition, Dubai will be the first to receive this latest masterpiece of Research and Product Development from Mercedes Benz.

The fleet of new buses consists of state-of-the-art low floor buses, representing a milestone within the transport strategy. Some 49 articulated buses, 18 standard buses and 13 coaches will be supplied to operate on newly planned Metro Bus, Airport Bus, VIP Bus and Emirates Express services.

The vehicles will be wheelchair accessible to facilitate movement for those with special needs. The bus entrances and interior will be totally free of steps. A manually operated ramp at the second door allows wheelchair users to board and alight without help. Sufficient space is provided for wheelchairs, prams, and luggage.

As part of this integration drive, bus stops will be reconstructed to ensure a step less entry into the buses and increase the available space for passenger waiting areas and new bus stop shelters. Bus stops will be fitted with electronic information panels to inform passengers of the next bus departures and other messages.

Mohammed Obaid Mullah, CEO of Dubai Transport said,
"The introduction of the state-of-the art buses is to encourage the use of Public Transport. This will contribute in easing the burgeoning traffic congestion caused due to the influx of people and businesses. The RTA is continuously committed to work towards providing an integrated transport network for the people of the Emirate in order to highlight the presence of Dubai globally for its breath taking infrastructure and transport."

Abdul Aziz Mallik, Director of Bus Transport said, "In line with its vision of providing smooth and safe transport for all, this new strategy will enable the public transport system to keep pace with future urban growth and rising travel demands in terms of quantity and quality of the public transport system. The ambitious and exciting upgrade of the bus system will help RTA achieve its objective of facilitating visitors and residents to move around Dubai Emirate and beyond. It will further confirm the fact that Dubai is at the leading edge of technology and innovation, whilst highlighting the government's commitment to understand and cater to the needs of the public."

RTA's mission statement is to create a transport system that will be finely coordinated to ensure the smooth movement of public across Dubai. The Integrated Transport Strategy is well timed to meet the challenges arising from the unprecedented growth in Dubai over the last ten years, which is now placing pressure upon the existing transport network.
