Final attendance figures for 3GSM World Congress 2006 in Barcelona confirmed the event as the biggest mobile show on Earth.
Ross Cormack Nawras CEO chaired an important session on Business Implications of Wireless Broadband bringing together some of the world's top decision makers in computer chips, technology providers and mobile operators. They debated how best to meet the mobile broadband needs of mobile customers worldwide through introduction of the latest technologies including 3G HSPDA-which has only just been made available at the end of 2005. Presentations were heard including 'Flash OFDM in Action', 'Voice over IP coming to an Operator near you', as well as a panel discussion on 'Putting Wireless Broadband in Perspective'.
The session chaired by Cormack included Mauro Sentinelli Vice Chairman of the GSM Association and MD Telecom Italia, Dr. Sachio Semmto founder and CEO of Japan's newest 3G operator eMobile, Ray Dolan, Chief Executive Officer, Flarion, Thomas Dirks Board Member and Chief Innovation Officer EPlus, Dan Dahle Chief Strategy Architect Intel, Pertti Johanssen, Chairman of Qualcomm Middle East, John Leonard, Vice President, Business Strategy & Offer Management, Network Solution Groups, Lucent Technologies. He also told the conference that Nawras was already installing HSPDA-the world newest mobile broadband technology.
During the panel discussion Cormack highlighted how Nawras had within less than a year of operation had already achieved many successes in establishing a state-of-the-art broadband network that was geared towards delivering best service and quality mobile broadband services to the people of Oman. He went on to add, as part of winning the licence for the 2nd mobile operator in Oman in 2004, Nawras was awarded a license to operate existing GSM services as well as future 3G services. As the first licensed operator in the Sultanate to activate 3G services, Nawras will be responsible for bringing the next phase of Mobile Broadband communication to Oman over the next few years.
The introduction of 3G will further strengthen Nawras position as the clear leader in the local Mobile Broadband market. Nawras is already the only mobile operator to offer Mobile Broadband services to all its customers based on EDGE technology which gives customers ISDN speed internet while on the move.
Cormack concluded, 'Attractive customer propositions in the area of mobile broadband are likely to be based around providing basic wireless broadband Internet services in a customer friendly and reliable way. The customer experience offered by ADSL has stimulated people's interest and demand for access to broadband Internet. In this regard we envision that Nawras mobile broadband technologies will do the same for Internet access that mobile communications has done for voice communication all over the world - shifting customers from landline technologies towards wireless mobile technologies.'
Nawras, as the customer experience innovator, has a strong commitment to bring the most advanced mobile services to Oman for the benefit of customers as well as being one of the early operators in the region to pilot these new and exciting Mobile Broadband services.'
A total attendance of over 50,000 visitors converged on the Fira de Barcelona 3GSM conference and exhibition centre from across the global mobile industry to do business in a decisive year for new multimedia services and growing markets.
