Mr. Omar Shteiwi, the Chairman of the Board of the BPG and Regional Intellectual Property Advisor, Nestle Middle East, said: "The BPG, based in Dubai, is a non-profit organization whose main objective is focused on spreading awareness about the existence of counterfeit products as well as illicit trade in the GCC & Yemen and the dangers they pose to the society in general and the consumer in particular."

Some of the most reputed global brands have joined hands to establish the BPG include Beiersdorf, British American Tobacco, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, Nestle, Phillips, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever.

Besides the major manufacturers, other founding members of the BPG include lawyers, legal consultants and trade mark and patent agents like Al Tamimi & Co, Clyde & Co, Rouse & Co International, and Saba & Co.

"These market leaders are alarmed at the economic, social, and moral impact that illicit trade has on consumers, governments, and legitimate businesses. The BPG has been founded in order to suggest and recommend effective measures to counter this social menace," added Mr. Shteiwi.

"BPG's strategy for achieving our goals is to use all legal means at our disposal to handle soaring brand protection costs. Of course we will not be able to do that without the active cooperation of consumers, industry partners, government authorities - local, regional and international - and the media, who naturally share our desire to free the regional markets from illicit products that are hazardous," Mr. Shteiwi observed.

The BPG also urges other brand owners working in the Arabian Peninsula, who seek to defend the integrity of their brands, to join the group to help rout the counterfeit menace altogether.
