RAK signs contract for second phase of hi-tech sewerage system

H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr AlQasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, signed the agreement for implementing the second phase of the state-of-the-art central sewerage system currently being set up in the emirate.
The Phase Two of the project involves laying a 350 km long sewerage pipeline linking all the residential and commercial establishments in
the designated areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Saud said that the sewerage project is an important milestone in the emirate's planned urban development
programme.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Kayed AlQasimi, Chairman of the Ras Al Khaimah Sewerage Authority (RSA) said that the work for the Phase Two of the
project would start on July 1, 2006. He added that the project, once completed, would improve the quality of life of the residents of Ras
Al Khaimah by reducing pollution and enriching the emirate's environment.
"More than 50 percent of the Phase One of the sewerage project, covering RAK Old Town and Daffan, is already complete", said Michel
Sakkal, Director General of the RAK Public Works and Services Department. He added that the main treatment plant of the project is under testing and would be commissioned in one month.
He said that the treatment plant would process 40 MLD of water which would be used for agricultural purposes.
The three-stage project having a total outlay of AED 300 million has a time frame of four years for completion. The third and final phase of
the project, covering Khuzam and Al Dhait areas, is expected to start off in six months time.
