TNS selected by major broadcasters for ditigal High Definition TV trial
- Monday, June 12 - 2006 at 09:31
Global market information provider, TNS, has been selected by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five to recruit and monitor a panel of 450 households to trial the latest High Definition (HD) technology on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) services.
High definition is a step change in television technology, which provides far clearer and more detailed pictures than normal standard definition TV. Each picture contains up to five times as much digital information as an ordinary TV picture.
Jennie Beck, Group Director, TNS Media, said: "The information TNS provides will be crucial in offering the broadcasters an insight as to how to get the best out of HDTV. We are very pleased to be working on this exciting new development, it further cements our position at the forefront of media research in the UK."
The audience panel was selected from online volunteers who registered on a website in April. All had existing HD Ready television sets and will be supplied with special DTT HD set top boxes. The trial is due to last six months.

About the trial:
The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five are conducting the first trial high definition broadcasts on digital terrestrial television in the UK. Due to last about six months, the trial aims to test all technical aspects of delivering high definition to an aerial and to conduct audience research on high definition on DTT. The trial is a closed technical test under licence from Ofcom and is restricted to 450 households within the London transmission footprint.
The BBC's HD stream is being transmitted by National Grid Wireless and the ITV, Channel 4 and Five multiplex is being transmitted by Arqiva, both from Crystal Palace. Special DTT HD receivers have been made by Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) and Humax. Siemens is supplying technical support to the BBC HD trial and Thomson has supplied coding, mux and playout to the ITV, Channel 4 and Five multiplex. The audience research is being conducted by TNS Media.
