Voice over Internet Protocol technology, which allows Internet users to make free or low cost phone calls, has been developing in a number of Middle Eastern locations, reported Gulf News. Licences have been granted in Jordan, Turkey and Bahrain, while Egypt will be allowing the service next year, although penetration rates in the region are low. VoIP is barred in the UAE and the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency blocks web sites offering the service.
