  • PRESS RELEASE

Global and regional digital leader LG Electronics has firmly stamped its leading position in the mobile communications industry with the launch of its latest creation - the world's first 5 mega-pixel GSM handset - in the region.

Boasting a refreshing new design that would capture the imagination of the region's customers, LG's KG920 is also the slimmest mobile phone in its category currently available to incorporate revolutionary features.

The KG920 is super slim at just 18mm wide and adopts an innovative 'twist and slim' design that features a 5 mega-pixel digital camera. The camera can rotate 180 degrees to take amazing high-resolution images as well as self-portraits.

During the launch, C.H Lee, President, LG Electronics Gulf FZE, said:
"As a true leader of the next-generation mobile communications technology, LG endeavours to provide the most innovative and convenient handsets to this discerning market. The KG920 outperforms even the latest digital cameras available in the market and we are confident that its minimalist look will surely appeal to all customers. Our latest product is a proof of our dedication to offer stylish design and sophisticated multimedia functions."

The KG920 incorporates an auto-focus charged-couple device (CCD) camera and a 2-inch QVGA LCD screen for VGA-level videos at 30 frames per second (fps). The handset also features a strobe flash, which makes it possible to shoot at a distance of 1.5 metres.

Lee added: "Our technology and design have been acknowledged by customers worldwide as some of the most cutting-edge in the world. This is one of the main reasons why we continue to be the leader of the digital revolution that is sweeping the world today."

The KG920 packs a punch with its robust design and multimedia features. The phone boasts a class-leading MP3/ACC/WMA/3GP player, Bluetooth, GPRS, Java and V1.1 USB port, and e-mail client. The battery life is an impressive 4 hours of talk-time and 250 hours of standby time.

The 2-inch TFT screen has the resolution of 240x320 pixels, and supports up to 262K colours. The display does not turn pale when it encounters direct sunlight, and information remains readable at any angle, unlike other handsets where colours get inverted. With 128 MB of shared memory and a miniSD card slot, the KG920 is the ideal device for storing a large amount of music files and photographs.

Last year, LG's regional GSM sales increased 15 per cent compared to 2004. LG has retained the fourth position in handset sales globally, with a 7.4 per cent market share in 2005.

LG currently ranks fourth in the world for mobile phones and is targeting sales of US$300 million in handsets in the Middle East and Africa region this year. LG expects to register a 50 per cent growth globally to seize the number three spot in handsets in two years.
