Oil spill threatens ecosystem

A huge oil spill has washed over 100 kilometres of Lebanon's coast after Israel bombed a power plant south of Beirut on 13 and 15 July, according to news agencies. The Lebanese government has asked for help to clean up the estimated 30,000 tonnes of oil that flooded into the sea after storage tanks at the Jiyyeh power plant were attacked. Local environmentalists say the marine ecosystem could take years to recover.
