The initiative, supported by professional divers, was held as part of a voluntary campaign aimed at educating the wharfage users on the need to preserve the quality of creek water.

Launching the operation, Hamdan Al Shaer, Director of Environment Department at Dubai Municipality, said the department has undertaken the clean up campaign under the banner "Keep Wharfages Clean."

"There were professional divers who were removing garbage from the creek bed during the cleanup. But we were keen on ensuring participation of the dhow workers in the entire operation so that they would be made aware of keeping the creek water clean," said Al Shaer.

He added that the volunteers also included Abra users and people who visit wharfages for different reasons. "We have distributed the volunteers along different wharfage points to ensure clean-up of the maximum possible space."

It is worth mentioning that the Dhow wharfages on the creek side and Al Hamriya receives more than 700 dhows every month. The waste floated from the creek bed, which included tyres, soft drink cans and others, was sent for recycling.
