The M/V ABU DHABI and M/V IBN HAYYAN, a UASC mother vessel and feeder, arrived at the Korean port on Friday. The ceremony was attended by the vessels' crew and UASC, PNC and DP World company officials.

The weekly UASC's Asia-Europe container service (AEC) and Japan service will bring an additional 280,000 TEUS of volume to PNC. Heavy slot chartering by three other lines, Hanjin, Senator and Regional Container Lines (RCL), contribute to the volume.

PNC will handle a total of 4,700 TEUS (twenty foot equivalent container units) of combined activity for the first calls of the M/V IBN HAYYAN and M/V ABU DHABI. The speed of handling these vessels is expected to be consistent or higher than PNC's already proven high productivity, which is currently averaging more than 35 gross moves per hour per crane since the facility opened earlier this year.

Last week PNC set a new internal production record by achieving an average gross crane production of 41.4 moves per hour per crane for the entire week.

PNC now has regular vessel calls from MSC, ZIM, EMIRATES and UASC on their current 1,200 metre berth area. Three more berths under construction are scheduled to open at the start of 2007.

Patrick Bol, Executive Managing Director, DP World and Pusan Newport Company Ltd., said:

'We are very pleased to welcome UASC to our new facility. UASC was kind enough to participate in our January opening ceremony. We are now happy that they are able to transfer permanently to Pusan Newport. We are determined to continue to provide them and our other customer with consistently high productivity and outstanding service which has now become a norm at our facility.'

About the PNC facility

The PNC port is located at the boundary of the West side of Busan City and eastern tip of Kyongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea. The new terminal, 1.2 kilometres long, consisting of three berths of 350 metres each, designed to cater for the new generation mega-container vessels, is the first of three phases of the PNC development. A further three berths are scheduled for completion at the end of 2006 and the final three are due to be in operation by 2009. The overall terminal has a conservative estimated handling capacity of 5.5 million TEU and will stretch 3.2 kilometres.

The advanced container handling equipment at the facility includes nine Ship-to-Shore cranes (STS) and 24 cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMGC). The STS cranes will enable the terminal to handle the new, wider container vessels and the facility will host the largest container cranes built to date with a rail gauge of 42.7 metres designed for nine traffic lanes and boom outreach over 22 rows. The RMGCs constructed by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co. handle nine rows with a stacking height of six containers and a lifting capacity of 65 LT. The semi-automated cranes are equipped with GPS and trailer positioning systems along with safety features for the protection of trucks.

The facility is forecast to become the Gateway Hub of Northeast Asia because of its strategic location between Japan and Northeast China. The surrounding area also has an extremely strong indigenous market and transportation infra-structure which makes the geographic position ideal for such a large container hub facility.

PNC is directly connected to an 8 lane uncongested expressway into the Korean hinterlands which reduces travel distance to 98% of all cities and industrial areas in Korea. With the expressway directly linked to PNC avoids the congested areas of Downtown Busan. PNC maintains an average trucking turn-time below 20 minutes. From 2008, the facility will open two on-dock rail facilities that will be directly connected to the rail network.

In addition, a total of 4.08 million square meters of terminal and logistics support area has been designated as a Free Trade Zone which will encompass international facilities for integrated logistics and affiliated industries.
