The sheer scale of the manpower and equipment that Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) mobilizes to explore for and produce oil and gas throughout its concession area unavoidably imposes a burden on the natural environment. But the Company takes utmost care to balance the short-term and long-term environmental impact with the short-term and long-term benefits to the nation derived from oil and gas, as expressed in the concept of sustainable development.

To this end, the Company has taken many steps, but perhaps the most significant so far has been obtaining and maintaining the ISO14001 certification for the entirety of its operations. That is quite an achievement given that PDO's operations extend over large and remote areas of Oman - about 1000 kilometres separate the Company's southernmost field from its marine export terminal at Mina al Fahal. The certification is proof that the Company has implemented a management system that enables it to control the impact of its activities, products or services on the natural environment.

The ISO-14001 certification has been instrumental in building an environmental awareness culture in the company, since it required the establishment of an internal communication network between the various levels and functions of the organization. The network of ISO 14001 focal points distributed throughout the company continues to be active in enhancing the environmental awareness in the company at all levels.
