Ford Expedition - a decade of evolution
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, September 04 - 2006 at 13:50
- PRESS RELEASE
Many SUV enthusiasts will tell you that their vehicle is little more than a practical means of transport.
This year, as the Expedition celebrates a decade of groundbreaking technology and innovative design, motorists worldwide agree that this iconic vehicle has changed the SUV landscape by offering a refreshing mix of power and versatility. Since its launch in 1996, the Expedition has sold nearly 2 million units across the globe - making it one of the most popular models in the full-size SUV segment.
Pointing to the Expedition's versatility, Hussein Murad, Sales & Marketing director at Ford Middle East, explains that many customers demand the kind of capability for transporting people and cargo that only comes with a full-size SUV.
"Families love the idea of being together on long, smooth drives and to be able to experience the outdoors in the company of their loved ones," says Murad. "This is where the Expedition comes in. The feeling of family togetherness is addressed effectively by this popular SUV, where passengers enjoy the experience of total mobility, freedom, comfort, space and safety."
In the Middle East especially, where large families are prevalent, motorists demand comfort and flexible space to accommodate their family members without compromising on quality, safety, cargo space and performance. "Here again, the Expedition fills that gap," he points out. "This SUV is large enough and provides the necessary towing power, utility, performance and space for families who want to spend quality time together in a safe, comfortable environment."
That type of versatility and convenience is precisely what has driven consumers to adopt today's SUV. Anyone who wants the ability to carry more than five passengers, quickly change from people hauling to cargo hauling, tow a trailer, travel on-road or venture off-road will likely recognize the appeal of a full-size SUV.
This year, the Ford design team that created the Expedition has plenty to look back on as they celebrate 10 years of success. The original Expedition was introduced to capitalise on the legacy of Ford's legendary F-Series, America's best-selling truck range for the past 29 years. Combining the F-Series toughness with style and versatility, the Expedition offered a host of high-tech features, a powerful and efficient engine, and remarkably comfortable terrain-handling characteristics.
With several industry firsts to its credit, including the first independent rear suspension, fully fold-flat seats with a power-folding third row, Safety Canopy system and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (RSC), the Expedition succeeded in capturing the imagination of SUV lovers who seek total control and a great ride experience.
The 2006 Expedition displays a distinctive, bold yet modern design with the highest quality
interior, safety and powerful driving dynamics. The vehicle is powered by Ford's truck-proven 5.4-litre Triton V8 engine, offering an impressive combination of power and refinement. Delivering 300 hp with 335 lbs-ft of torque, the Expedition can tow up to 9,100 lbs.
On the road, the Triton V8 engine shows its mettle. Powerful and stable even at high speeds, the Expedition responds to every command from the driver. Off road, this refined SUV is also extremely confident, with low speed manoeuvres being handled with great finesse, thanks to its high torque.
The 2000 Expedition model was the first full-size SUV to earn the five-star front safety NCAP ratings for the driver and passenger from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - a rating that it has successfully held ever since.
The Expedition harnesses Ford's renowned safety technology with Ford's Personal Safety System as standard equipment. The Safety Canopy has side air curtains and a special sensor that monitors vehicle orientation to provide substantial rollover protection. The SUV comes with AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, a technology that automatically engages counter measures to help the driver reduce the risk of a rollover.
A body-on-frame vehicle structure, stiffer frame and the all-new, world-class suspension provide superior ride, handling, comfort and stability. Inside its spacious cabin, the Expedition offers an abundance of luxury and comfort. Road visibility is excellent, and an aesthetically pleasing dashboard puts the driver at greater ease.
"A full-size SUV such as the Expedition will remain a cherished piece of automobile history," says Chelsea Lau, Chief Designer of the Expedition design team. "The clean surfaces and chiseled good looks demonstrate athleticism, and the vehicle's unique design proudly displays its Ford SUV heritage while creating its own distinguished personality and character."
