GCAA awards AED100M project to Athena Emirates

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has awarded an AED100m contract to ATHENA EMIRATES LLC, to build the Sheikh Zayed Centre, a new Air Navigations Services Centre, located at Raha area 2 Km west of Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The contract was signed by Eng. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Development for Government Sector, Chairman of GCAA and by Mr. Charalambos Giatsos, the Director General of Athena Emirates on Sunday 3rd September 2006.

According to the contract, the project will be completed within 14 months, by November 2007. The Site will house two main buildings designated the Area Control Centre building and the Emergency Area Control Centre building each of which have been designed to reflect the GCAA role in the UAE.

Also featuring on the site are four unique design 60m masts for the communications equipment antennas providing a blend of aesthetic quality with practical application. The site will be totally autonomous for power providing four levels of fallback from prime power for the main Air Traffic Centre (ATC) equipment.

The Area Control Centre building will feature a 600m2 Air Traffic Control (ATC) room with sufficient Sector Suites to accommodate the air traffic expansion for the next 20 years. The ATC room will be equipped with the latest technology ATC equipment and will cover the next 20 years (minimum) of air traffic movement to a predicted level of 2.25 million air movements per year.

Athena Emirates LLC is a subsidiary of ATHENA S.A. which was established in Greece 40 years ago and since inception has executed over $US 6 Billion in construction works. ATHENA S.A. has completed major international projects such as the Olympic Stadium and the International Broadcasting Centre in Athens, the Rio Antirio Bridge in Patras, Greece and the construction of a parallel runway at Thessalonica Airport, Road and Interchange construction and other major Marine & Harbour works.
