DCCI and Law Group receive Chairman of International Court of Arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce

Abdul Rahman Ghanem Al Mutaiwee, Director General of Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), received Professor Pierre Tercier, Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration at the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), accompanied with Sami Houerbi, Director of ICC for Middle East and Africa, and Kifaya Hamami, General Coordinator at the UAE National Committee of ICC.

Al Mutaiwee welcomed Professor Tercier and his accompanied delegation stressing the importance of the ICC as an international organization that focuses on commercial arbitration. He underlined the DCCI's interest in cooperating with the ICC benefiting from the DCCI's participation and membership in the international business community.

'Dubai enjoys a strong, developing economy, but this rapid growth of economy could sometimes lead to commercial disputes that the DCCI is keen to resolve through arbitration means available at DIAC and its related Board of Trustees and through activating and enhancing coordination with the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC,' said Al Mutaiwee.

Professor Pierre Tercier, Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration in the ICC, highly appreciated the role of the DCCI in supporting Dubai's economy and commercial dispute resolution through supporting the activities of DIAC. He added that the ICC could enhance its position in the region through collaborating with the DCCI and DIAC.

'Our bilateral cooperation could be fruitful through training a number of arbitrators from Dubai at the ICC whose International Court of Arbitration deals with more than 400 cases of commercial disputes, and that our role should be integrated not competitive with DIAC,' said Prof. Tercier.

He invited DCCI and DIAC to host, support and participate in an international conference of commercial arbitration which the ICC plans to hold in Dubai on April 22-23, 2007.

Dr. Hussam Al Talhuni, Director of DIAC, stressed the importance of cooperating, discussing and resolving commercial dispute cases with the ICC, adding that DIAC has dealt with more than 52 cases in 2005 and 35 cases till the end of August this year. The center also cooperates with 177 arbitrators and is ready to host any kind of training courses to be organized by the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC for arbitrators.

The Law Group, who also met with Prof. Tercier, discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between the group and the ICC, in addition to the role of arbitration in resolving civil and commercial disputes which is integrating with the role of national courts, and clarifying the role or arbitration as a positive means to ensure the rights of all disputing parties.

The Law Group conducted a presentation in which they explained the goals and programs of the group, introducing the profession ethical code, and how to apply for the group and be a member.
