DWC holds special Ramadan events on campus

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, September 26 - 2006 at 15:18
  • PRESS RELEASE

Dubai Women's College holds during the month of Ramadan a series of events and activities that enhance students healthy and social practices during the holy month.

The Department of Students Services initiates several activities every Ramadan where students participate in charity campaigns, meet with scholars and experts to raise their awareness on issues such as healthy eating habits, involvement in charity projects, and community relations development.

Dr. Abdul Rahman al Sumait, an Islamic scholar whose main work is focused on helping the needy people in Africa, addressed DWC students on the significance of charity work. He encouraged all students to be leaders of necessary change in their societies and to never wait for others to initiate the change.

"The first step is always very difficult, but the reward you will feel after helping others is worth all the obstacles and difficulties," he said. His lecture included a presentation of his 27-years charity work experience in different parts of Africa where several projects have been established to help the needy people.

Students had also the chance to learn more about healthy eating habits during the month of Ramadan through a lecture that was presented to them by Mariam Al Shaer, a Nutrition Specialist from DOHMS. Al Shaer's presentation attracted more than 400 students who were eager to learn more about organizing and controlling their eating habits during the holy month so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle and not feel tired or exhausted due to fasting. She advised students to avoid eating too much sweets, eat slowly, have meals that include carbohydrates, drink milk and water, and to exercise for at least half an hour every day.

DWC will also host an Iftar dinner on October 12 where students, staff members, and their families gather and share home made dishes. Expatriate staff members and their families get the chance to learn more about the holy month of Ramadan and its traditions through a Ramadan night's interaction with students and their families. The event is organized in cooperation with DWC's Students' Parliament.

DWC's Students Parliament is also organizing a charity campaign that will take place inside the College's campus for the purpose of raising fund for the needy people in Dubai. Donation boxes will be distributed in different location on campus and College Departments will compete to raise more needed items and fund for those who need them.
