FedEx honored for environmental contributions in the UAE during World Environment Day

  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, October 01 - 2006 at 12:51
  • PRESS RELEASE

FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company and a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX), received a special citation from the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on World Environment Day for its outstanding contributions to EEG's Paper and Can Collection Campaign. FedEx recycled more than 12 tons of paper in 2005, equivalent to saving more than 168 trees.

Mohamad Sayegh, FedEx Senior Manager - Middle East Operations, accepted a certificate of appreciation presented by Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG and Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al Kindi, Minister of Environment and Water.

"Over the years, FedEx has been actively supporting EEG's recycling campaigns. We see it as a practical and significant way of helping reduce waste and preserving the environment we work and live in. As a responsible corporate citizen, FedEx has made it a point to either initiate or support similar efforts in areas where the company operates." said Hamdi Osman, FedEx Vice President for the Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent and Africa

Mrs. Al Marashi cited FedEx's dedication in implementing environment-friendly initiatives and expressed optimism that the company will not only continue to be an active player but will serve as a role model for other businesses to preserve a clean and green environment for residents and visitors of the UAE.

"The amount of paper used by FedEx's Dubai operation has steadily decreased over the past 5 years, dropping by 15 per cent in the last two years. For the most part, this achievement is due to a more widespread use of technology in our operations. We have implemented various technology applications that not only help us serve our clients more efficiently, but also make our operations more environment-friendly," added Hamdi.

The technological advances pioneered by FedEx over the years today enable its customers to make an increasingly significant number of their business transactions electronically, without the use of paper, from arranging package pick-ups to the instant tracking of their goods which FedEx transports worldwide.

Last year, FedEx also received a certificate of appreciation from EEG for supporting the environmental group's Can and Toner Collection Campaign. All FedEx employees in the UAE participated and contributed to the recycling drive by collecting and donating paper, cardboards, aluminium, glasses, plastic and toners.
