Occupational Health Conference hosted by PDO

PDO's preparations are underway to host Oman's first Occupational Health Conference, set for 11th -13th December 2006 in Al-Bustan Hotel Palace.

Following the event's official launch at a press conference earlier in September, PDO and the organizing company Darran LLC have been coordinating with concerned local authorities and international organizations in preparations to bring Occupational Health to the fore front in Oman.

World experts from Australia, UK, the US and Asia have confirmed their participation in this first conference in Oman to introspect on Occupational Health and its impact on the social & economic development. Renowned speakers including Dr. David Snashal, President Faculty of Occupational Medicine Royal College of Physicians, London, Dr. Tawfik Khoja, Director General GCC Health Ministries Council, Dr. said Arnaout Regional Adviser (EMRO) World Health Organization, Dr. Bernard Huisman Vice President - Health Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Prof. Tar China Aw professor of Occupational Medicine, University of Kent, UK and Prof. David Koh professor and Head Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore will be speaking at the conference.

In mid September, PDO hosted a roundtable on "Occupational Health Measures and its Current Status in Oman". Eminent panelists from various quarters like academic institutions, ministries and research institutions participated in the discussions. The panelists included Saleh bin Nasser bin Juma Al Araimi, General Manager, Public Authority for Social Insurance; Dr. Mohammed Ali Al Shafaee, Head of Family Medicine & Public Health Department, College of Medicine & Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University; ; Dr. Nasser S. M. Al Maskery, Chief Medical Officer, Petroleum Development Oman LLC; Aqeel Abdulmajeed Al Lawati, Senior Economic Researcher, Ministry of National Economy; Jamal bin Mohammed Al Mazroui, Industrial Safety Inspector, Ministry of Manpower; Dr. Salim Said Al Wahaibi, Director of Environmental Health & Occupational Health & Safety, Ministry of Health: Abdul Amir Al Ajmi, External Affairs and Communications Manager, Petroleum Development Oman LLC and Gregory Greenwell, Head of Corporate Communications, Petroleum Development Oman LLC who acted as the moderator. Oman Economic Review, the Media Partner, covered the event with an in depth coverage. The panelists underscored the importance of Occupational Health to Oman's socio-economic development and called for a pro-active attitude on Occupational Health in Oman.

Participants from the wider Middle East region and as far as New Zealand have registered for the conference. Sabrah Al Riyami, of Darran LLC, said such a response is very encouraging and testimony to the importance accorded to Occupational Health. It is also just reward for PDO's benevolent efforts to support Oman's society by hosting this conference as a means of contributing to Oman's sustainable development.
