Quality Health Safety and Environment conducts Safety workshops for RTA Metro employees

In its efforts to seek to ensure safety during the construction of the Dubai Metro, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has been conducting workshops through the Quality Health Safety and Environmental Department for its employees and the management of the consultants and contractors on safety.

Safety is a genuine concern and the prime responsibility of the RTA, the QHSE department works towards ensuring that there will no injuries or decrease its possibilities during the construction and execution of the Metro project thus setting and adhering to the highest standards of safety management in Dubai.

Dr Qutaiba Al Qaysi, Manager of QHSE, Rail Agency said, "The prime responsibility for site safety rests with the contractor, who in turn is monitored by the engineer to ensure that the required standards are complied with. The Rail Agency sets the standards and maintains an overview of the activities of the engineer and the contractor. We conduct periodic risk assessments through which we identify hazards, assess the risk and introduce mitigation measures to reduce the risk to acceptable levels as no construction project is risk free."

"Through workshops for our employees, we emphasize on our involvement and commitment to safety, wearing of Safety Helmets, Footwear, and Hi-Vis Garments on site. We explain to them the systems and services which will not create risks to others and thus provide a safe and healthy work environment. Safety is a non negotiable aspect of the project and must take equal priority alongside production and quality. Our standards meet the approved technical specifications and we ensure that all our appliances are tested and controlled by trained and experienced people," he added.

The QHSE team ensures that the distribution and supply of site electricity meets the minimum standard of IP 44 and all electrical portable hand tools, lighting etc are 110V. On the welding and cutting front, besides keeping a tab on the tools used and handled they ensure operators wear PPE. Key performance Indicators have been established around Accident Frequency Rates and Severity Rates.
