The 'Moving Lives' community relations programme is aimed at organisations concerned with helping people with disabilities more actively participate in society. DP World has chosen this theme in recognition that mobility is fundamental to allowing people to become involved in education and employment.

Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group CEO of Ports & Freezone World (P&F World), which oversees DP World, said, 'We are delighted to be able to contribute in this way. According to UN figures, there are more than 10 million severely disabled people amongst the Arab population in the region and approximately 10% of the world's population is born with or develop a disability during their lifetime. This figure rises to 20% in developing countries.

'As a global company operating in many emerging markets, we feel we can make a difference in the communities in which we operate by concentrating our community relations efforts on helping people with disabilities become more mobile.'

Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DP World's UAE region said, 'The movement of goods has allowed Dubai and DP World to grow and prosper. In many ways this mirrors what happens within a community when people are able to better connect and integrate within society, participating in education and employment.

'We hope, initially in this small way, with our contribution to helping people become more mobile, that we can make a difference.'

The van is being donated to the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, while the wheelchairs will be for the benefit of children undergoing treatment in the cerebral palsy wing at Sheikh Rashid Paediatric Centre based in Dubai.
