  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, September 02 - 2012 at 12:08

Abu Dhabi Ports Co has launched operations at a new multi-billion port facility that aims to significantly bolster the UAE's economic future. Khalifa Port, which was built on 2.7 square kilometres of reclaimed land five kilometres off the coast near Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is the first computer-controlled, semi-automated port in the region. Phase 1 of the new port can handle 2.5 million containers a year, and 12 million tonnes of general cargo. That capacity is expected to grow by 2030 to 15 million containers and 35 million tonnes of general cargo.
