Abu Sheikha Drugstore expands its medical logistics services with first bioabsorbable coronary stent

Abu Sheikha Drugstore has completed procedures for registering the world's first bioabsorbable vascular stent under the trade mark, ABSORB, in Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA).

The leading distributor of pharmaceutical and medical supplies said that it will make the new scaffold developed by Abbott Vascular, the global leader in cardiac and vascular care, available to Jordan's hospitals and medical centers within the few coming months.

The device recently approved by CE Mark heralds a new era in angioplasty given its capability in restoring blood flow by opening a clogged vessel and providing support to the coronary artery until the device dissolves shortly after being implanted, leaving behind a treated vessel free of a permanent metallic implant. In addition, the need to administer long-term dual anti-platelet therapy to patients may be reduced because the temporary scaffold is completely absorbed.

In his comment, Taiseer Abu Sheikha, the General Manager of Abu Sheikha Drugstore, said, "We at Abu Sheikha Drugstore pay special keenness to supplying the medical sector in the Kingdom with the latest advances in the world of medicine to make it a destination of choice for patients seeking advanced healthcare services."

"To ensure the best possible outcome from vascular device implantations, an elite team of Jordanian cardiology physicians will receive training in a number of the European medical centers on the successful deployment of the coronary device," Abu Sheikha added.

Remarkably, ABSORB is made of Polylactide, a proven biocompatible material that is commonly used in medical implants such as absorbable sutures, and has been developed to replace the old bare and drug eluting metal stents used in the treatment of coronary artery diseases.
