ADNIC pioneers electronic Pharmacy Benefit Management in the UAE

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, October 16 - 2012 at 11:37
  • PRESS RELEASE

Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company (ADNIC), in partnership with MedImpact Arabia introduced the Pharmacy Benefit Management service (PBM), to the UAE in October 2011. By doing so, ADNIC was the first UAE health insurance company to comply with the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi's (HAAD) June 1, 2012 mandate, and was the first company to implement PBM services in the entire Middle East.

Today, ADNIC announced that its PBM has already processed 1,626,830 prescription drug claims in real-time serving 129,221 ADNIC members at 616 UAE network pharmacies.

The PBM partnership with MedImpact Arabia allows ADNIC members and their pharmacists to complete the insurance processing for payment of a drug in seconds, eliminating paperwork and, more importantly, providing a comprehensive and sophisticated system of PBM drug safety and appropriateness checks for each prescription to ensure a higher level of reliable pharmacy care is provided to ADNIC members throughout the UAE.

Commenting on the successful implementation of the PBM services, Mr. Walid Sidani, CEO of ADNIC said, "Our PBM partnership with MedImpact Arabia further supports ADNIC's march toward Perpetual Excellence by dramatically enhancing clinical safety for members, providing innovative tools for our entire pharmacy network, and delivering sustainable value to shareholders and partners by supporting cost effective quality health care."

"The PBM system checks for hundreds of clinical edits supporting quality care for patients. Checks include edits for drug interactions, therapeutic appropriateness and disease contraindications," said Dr. Mohanned Al Makhamreh, Senior Manager - Quality Performance and Provider Relations of ADNIC.

"Very importantly, 1629 severe drug interactions have been prevented for ADNIC members and more than 700,000 tailored and reliable clinical messages sent online, real-time to pharmacists using PBM services across ADNIC's pharmacy network since October, preventing unnecessary patient harm, emergencies and medical costs. In addition, our PBM delivers significant savings by stopping unnecessary prescriptions, duplicate therapies, and abuse.

"MedImpact Arabia's PBM technology represents a leap forward for pharmacists in the practice and delivery of quality pharmacy care to patients," said Dr. Emad Elbehisy, Pharmacist and Managing Director of Urban Pharmacies Group.

"MedImpact Arabia provides rich clinical information drug-by-drug and patient-by-patient for pharmacists to use in patient counseling. Additionally, from a business perspective, ADNIC immediately guarantees payment for authorized PBM claims, which eliminate unnecessary administrative costs and write-offs."

"We are proud to be working with ADNIC to deliver PBM services to the UAE market," said Dale Brown, General Manager of MedImpact Arabia. ADNIC is a true market innovator and leader." Brown also said that the PBM capabilities deployed by ADNIC are as technologically advanced as those deployed across the US for leading health plans, enhanced to meet the specific needs of the UAE market.
