Air Berlin receives first A320 with sharklets

  • United Arab Emirates: Thursday, March 28 - 2013 at 01:07

Austria-based airline NIKI, wholly-owned by Germany's Air Berlin, has taken delivery of its first Airbus A320 equipped with Sharklets. The fuel saving wing tip devices, which replace the A320's current wing tip fence, improve the aircraft's aerodynamics and significantly cut the airline's fuel burn and emissions by up to 4%, according to Airbus. By 2015, the Air Berlin Group, Germany's second-biggest airline, will receive 13 more A320-Family aircraft with Sharklets. Etihad Airways became Air Berlin's largest shareholder in December 2011, when the Abu Dhabi-based carrier increased its share of 2.99% to 29.1% for €73m.
