Al-Toukhi leads consortium for Yanbu power plant worth SR11bn

His Excellency Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al-Ibrahim, the Governor of Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), stated that under the Patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Majed bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Madinah region, His Excellency the Minister of Water and Electricity, Eng. Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Al-Hussayen, have signed Yanbu power and desalination plant phase-3 contracts on Wednesday, 19th of December 2012 with local and international companies.
1850 MW will be exported to the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) and 650 MW to Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (MARAFIQ) and 200 MW and steam will feed the water desalinization unit.
The plant will be constructed at Yanbu on the West Coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and will be located in an area adjacent to the existing SWCC's plants.
H.E. Governor of SWCC, pointed out that this project aims to fulfill the region's need for desalinated water as urbanization and population in the region of Medina is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, as well as increasing in the numbers of visitors to the Prophet's Mosque throughout the year, in line with the Government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques directives to provide desalinated water to all cities and provinces.
Further, Dr. Al-Ibrahim highlighted that after offers from bidders were received, SWCC had been actively seeking to improve the efficiency of the project and by the Grace of God and then SWCC efforts, SWCC was able to adopt global major equipment with high specifications and operate with highest efficiency than those were introduced in basic offers for the power plant, using boilers to operate on the basis of (Super-Critical) technology instead of (Sub-Critical) for the power plant and increasing the Performance Ratio (PR) of the desalination plant. This has been done without any increase in prices, therefore, led to fuel saving of more than five million barrels per year.
Finally, H.E. Governor of SWCC, stated that, SWCC will take advantage of its expertise in working with the contractor in both design and implementation stages of the project. And will keep of using the state of the art technologies and up to date equipments in each project in order to obtain best efficient technical and economical aspect in line with engineering values.
