Alcatel-Lucent to trim over 5,000 jobs worldwide

Telecoms equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent plans to make 5,490 jobs redundant worldwide as part of a cost-saving programme unveiled in July, Reuters has reported. The French company said in July that it would reduce its global headcount by "around 5,000" staff and find €1.25bn ($1.64bn) in savings by the end of 2013 by exiting unprofitable markets and contracts to weather stiff competition and weak demand in the global telecoms equipment industry. "These are difficult decisions but are necessary for the long-term health and sustainable profitability of the company," a spokesman for the group said. Alcatel-Lucent employs 76,000 people worldwide.
