AMD to design ARM-based servers

  • USA: Tuesday, October 30 - 2012 at 02:55

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced it will design a 64-bit ARM SoC based on ARM's own V8-compliant core, which it will ship in its own SeaMicro branded systems in 2014. The long-time x86 CPU maker will not market the chip as a merchant offering to other OEMs, although it may be open to such sales or to creating custom servers for giant Web 2.0 customers such as Amazon, Facebook and Google. Analysts said the decision to use ARM's own core design, the Atlas 64-bit core that is a successor to the ARM A15, is driven by AMD's time-to-market goals.
