First ever Arabic script web domain awaits approval

ICANN, the global regulator for web addresses is due to give approval for the first ever Arabic script Top-Level Domain name, شبكة. The domain namespace, pronounced 'shabaka', which translates to 'web', will only operate in Arabic script on the Internet and end users will only be able to use it by typing in Arabic. This move away from Roman script is part of new Top-Level Domain program being rolled out. شبكة. is expected to be one of the first Top-Level domains approved, beating around 1900 other applicants. More details are scheduled to be announced on Sunday March 24, following a decision from ICANN.
