AWQAF, Minor Affairs Foundation sign Memorandum of Understanding with Grohe for UAE's first eco-friendly mosque

  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, February 13 - 2013 at 14:12
  • PRESS RELEASE

Grohe, the world's leading premium brand for sanitary fittings, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the UAE ministry body AWQAF and the Minor Affairs Foundation to fit Grohe's sustainable fittings in the UAE's first eco-friendly mosque as part of the regional implementation of Grohe's water sustainability project; The Grohe Green Mosque initiative.

After the successful implementation of the initiative across the region in KSA, Syria and Jordan, this partnership will see Grohe donate its sustainable fittings to the Khalifa Al Tajer Mosque in Deira, with the intention of reducing water consumption in the mosque.

The Khalifa Al Tajer Mosque will be the first of its kind in the UAE and the largest mosque in Dubai with a scheduled completion date in 2014. The mosque will be built to accommodate 3,500 worshippers and will be constructed over an area of 105,000 square feet. The mosque is set to feature the latest green technologies including solar panels and the recycling and purifying of ablution water for irrigation and washroom supply.

The UAE has one of the highest water consumption rates in the world and it has been reported that in the UAE, per capita water usage is 550 litres per person per day, as compared to a global national average of 250 litres per person. Grohe's and AWQAF's intentions are closely aligned with the aim of making the mosque as sustainable as possible. Grohe's self-closing mixers and flushing systems will provide the mosque with solid sustainable water solutions, reducing the excess waste water consumption of the thousands of worshippers.

Tayeb Al Rais, Secretary-General at AMAF, said, "With Grohe's sustainable technology we are looking forward to reducing the amount of excess water consumption that many mosques see. We are very happy to be working alongside Grohe on this project as we not only appreciate the sustainable element of their products, but recognize the high quality of their fittings too. Grohe's fittings will enable the mosque to make considerable water savings to the benefit of both the mosque and the environment, and we very much look forward to its completion."

Firas Ibrahim, UAE Regional Manager, Grohe, said, "We are delighted to have signed this MOU with AWQAF and the Minor Affairs Foundation. Together we hope to raise awareness of water conservation in the UAE whilst implementing practical solutions as part of Grohe's global water conservation initiative 'WaterCare'. Through our collaboration, we hope to play our part in reducing the water footprint of the UAE."

"The installation of our advanced faucets will aid in reducing water consumption and provide worshippers with easy to use facilities whilst performing ablution. We would like to extend our utmost gratitude to AWQAF and the Minor Affairs Foundation and look forward to a long and positive partnership," he added.

Grohe supports local communities wherever possible, and as part of the Grohe WaterCare campaign - the more you save, the more you enjoy - Grohe is aiming to increase awareness of water consumption and conservation possibilities across the region.
