- PRESS RELEASE
Bayer Healthcare has launched its new low-dose oral contraceptive, YAZ, which offers important clinical benefits for women. The new regimen was developed in line with Bayer HealthCare's vested interest in manufacturing products that cater to women's evolving health requirements.
"One of the factors that contribute to YAZ's efficiency as a birth control solution is the reduced hormone-free period, which helps cut down on the margin of error in pregnancy prevention," said Prof. Dr. Johannes Bitzer, Chief Physician and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University Hospital Basel in Switzerland.
Prof. Dr. Bitzer stressed the importance of following the regimen as specified to ensure its results, stating that failing to take the low-dosage pill immediately on the day after the last hormone-free tablet was taken could lead to the development of ovarian cysts and, in some cases, to ovulation. Prof. Dr. Bitzer went on to explain that YAZ was developed for easy use, as it comes in a 28-day pack containing the 24 active hormone tablets and four hormone-free pills. He also underscored the importance of consulting with a physician for proper diagnosis before taking the contraceptive.
Extending the treatment period of YAZ active pills from 21 to 24 days per cycle prolongs the therapeutic effects of drospirenone. Drospirenone, the unique progestin contained in YAZ, counteracts the water retention often seen when taking estrogens, thereby reducing the bloated feeling that many women experience, especially when starting on the pill. Clinical studies have also shown that because of the anti-androgenic properties, pills containing drospirenone can help with the treatment of moderate acne in women as well as with the emotional and physical symptoms of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).
