Bechtel blamed for Qatar's new airport delay

  • Qatar: Saturday, April 13 - 2013 at 01:18

Bechtel Corp, the principal contractor of Hamad International Airport has been blamed by Qatar Airways for the delayed opening of the country's new airport, Dow Jones has reported. "They have to be blamed ... for our delay in the first place," said the chief executive of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker. The airport was scheduled to open on April 1, but was delayed when the facility was determined to not meet Qatari civil defence building codes, stalling the issuing of its occupancy permit. Bechtel had been "complacent" in meeting "all the regulatory requirements" mandated by the airline and Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority for the new Hamad International Airport, said Al Baker, adding that he still expects the new airport to be fully open by the end of the year.
