Apple iPhone on show at Gitex

Apple iphoneGitex kicks off this weekend in Dubai, so expect to see plenty of new products on show as companies give us more reasons to part with our hard earned cash for the ‘latest and greatest’.

Among the products on show is what has become the hottest, must-have gadget of the moment - Apple’s iPhone. It’s not available here in the Middle East yet, but with speculation suggests we’ll see it in UAE stores this October, through partner Pro Technology.

The bad news, according to press reports, is that it will cost up to 15 per cent more than it does in the US, so will be priced around Dhs2,100. Still, that’s the price you have to pay if you want to be ahead of the game.

Hopefully, once available, we’ll get one in for review. And of course, you can be sure we will be on the lookout for other hot products, plus we’ll be interviewing the people shaping the market over here.

Do we know yet which of the many functions will be available via the mobile networks here?

I have heard a lot of the problem is that the cool functions don’t work as they are not yet available by many mobile operators around the World…

Ive heard the same thing, plus Im dubious to whether the initial price shall hover around the dhs 2,000 mark. I wont be surprised that with the tech hungry UAE market, the price is not inflated somehere close to dhs 3,000

Although it looks great and the idea has been coming since the inception of the 60GB colour Ipod, im failing to see if this will be used for anything more than a music and photo sharing console.

I think it is a cool device but most of its appeal is all the excellent stuff you can do on it. Therefore it would depend on a) if the networks allow it, b) the mobile networks not charging very high data fees.

I will be waiting a bit longer before I get mine - waiting for the initial bugs to fixed !!!

I havent read any details of the functions that will be available in the region…but they probably dont work since the phone was initially made only for the US market. Knowing Apple, they will continue on improving the phone’s capability rapidly to make sure it is technically superior to the competition from any region. A friend of mine has one and surfing through a Wi-Fi network is amazing! Once the Middle East version comes out, I would assume all the cool functions should work. Lets hope someone from Apple will post an official reply!

The software unlock will enable all features except the Visual Voicemail which is operator dependent. SMS and GPRS works fine in UAE at least with Etisalat - YouTube needs a bit of tweaking but it can be done.
