Al Ain: Al Ain Hospital, owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), has upgraded its MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanning systems by incorporating the latest technologies.
“This is an extremely important initiative for Al Ain Hospital as with this upgrade we have reduced patient waiting times significantly,” explained Dr. Jamal AlDeen AlKoteesh, Chairman of Clinical Imaging Institute at Al Ain Hospital.
“A lumbar spine MRI now takes only 15 minutes and pelvis MRI can be done in just 25 minutes,” added Dr. AlKoteesh.
With the upgrade the unit did a total of 5124 scans last year including close to 1800 spine MRI scans, over 1500 brain scans and more than 500 scans of the lower extremities
The enhancement of the equipment and the software has made a drastic improvement in diagnostic quality leading to less patient recall. Due to the very high resolution offered by the new machines, doctors get extra contrast enhancement with high matrix resolution without increasing the scan time.
“With this upgrade we have been able to reduce the number of scans abandoned due to claustrophobia and by involuntary movements caused by patients which distort the quality of the scans,” added Dr. AlKoteesh.
“The new enhancements at Al Ain Hospital helps us to offer a comprehensive range of imaging services including Stroke Imaging, Masculoskeletal Imaging, Abdominal Imaging, Breast Imaging and Cardiac Imaging,” added Dr. AlKoteesh.
Stroke Imaging, which is an invaluable tool for the management of patients with acute stroke, helps in revealing abnormalities in the white matter fiber structure of the brain and and provide models of brain connectivity.
“With Al Ain being a centre for sports, the new enhanced facilities offered in Masculoskeletal Imaging is a boon to the residents of Al Ain. This unit covers the diagnostic imaging of bones, joints, soft tissues of the extremities, and the spine and is particularly focused on MR imaging of sports-related injuries and MR imaging of tumors of the musculoskeletal system. We work in close collaboration with our colleagues in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Radiation Oncology, and Pathology,” added Dr. AlKoteesh.
Imaging of internal organs in the abdominal region including liver, pancreas, spleen, kidney and bowels is covered under Abdominal Imaging. Cardiac imaging, which helps in the diagnosis of heart condition is also provided at the Clinical Imaging Institute of Al Ain Hospital.
With a concerted move around the world to increase awareness about breast cancer the Breast Imaging facilities offered at Al Ain Hospital serve in early detection and treatment through a combination of physical exam, mammogram, or another imaging test, or by some combination of these. But no matter of how it was found, the only way to know for sure if it’s cancer is to do a biopsy. This means a sample of cells or tissue is taken from the area and looked at under the microscope. For suspicious areas that cannot be felt (and even for some that can), imaging tests may be used to be sure the right area is biopsied.
While outpatients can make bookings from 8 am to 7 pm daily, and possibly will face a waiting time, inpatients have easy access to the unit, as required by the concerned doctors.
