Through the partnership agreement, Medtronic will showcase cutting edge technology used by the hospital’s Total Joints Replacement Center of Excellence, which will become a reference site for the technology and a training center for orthopedic surgeons from Central Europe, the Mediterranean region, Middle East, India and South Africa.

The American Hospital Dubai’s Total Joints Replacement Center of Excellence was established in 1998 and has performed over 2,000 joint replacement surgical procedures – the largest number of any hospital in the Middle East – many using a fully flexible knee implant developed by Dr Samih Tarabichi, Director of the center, who is accredited by the American Board of Orthopedics and is a fellow of the American College of Orthopedics.

This extensive experience and expertise is one of the main reasons that Medtronic selected the American Hospital Dubai as its regional partner. Souheil Hakim, Clinical & Marketing Manager for Medtronic, explained: “The American Hospital Dubai’s enormous experience in the field of joint replacement surgery – greater than any other center in our region – and its excellent reputation, combined with Dubai’s accessible location and excellent communications, were the determining factors in selecting the hospital as our partner.

“Medtronic will be working with the American Hospital Dubai on software research to enhance our existing computer assisted orthopedic surgery technology, which helps surgeons ‘navigate’ through a hip or knee replacement procedure, from the initial incisions to the accurate alignment of the implanted joint, by providing real-time simulation. Medtronic will be bringing orthopedic surgeons to Dubai from all over the region to familiarize them with the technology and to observe Dr Tarabichi, who will also be working with the Medtronic advisory panel on developing these surgical navigation systems.”

Dr Tarabichi, Director of the Total Joints Replacement Center of Excellence, added: “Our work at the American Hospital Dubai focuses on knee replacement, which has a particular significance and relevance to the lifestyles of muslim males, and which has attracted many patients from around the region. The surgical procedure is just the start of the process for the patient and we maintain contact with all our patients over a period of several years to monitor the performance of the joint. This accumulated body of experience is unique and of great value and, with Medtronic, we now have the opportunity to share this with other surgeons and to contribute to the development of this important medical technology.”

The surgical results of all joint replacement procedures at the American Hospital Dubai are submitted to the University of Dundee, UK, which monitors the performance of all the leading joint replacement centers around the world. The results from the American Hospital Dubai’s center have proved to be consistently strong and this led to the university selecting the hospital as a training centre for orthopedic surgeons.
