Speaking to influential business leaders at a Qatar British Business Forum (QBBF) event on Tuesday, BAE Systems Group Business Development Director, Alan Garwood, highlighted the critical role of partnerships in driving U.K. exports to Qatar.
He provided QBBF members with deep insights into current and future trade ties between Qatar and the U.K. with a special focus on exporting British goods. Charged with promoting BAE Systems globally and former Head of Defence Export Services at the U.K. Ministry of Defence, Garwood urged those in attendance to take a broader view of partnerships and their long-term contribution to driving exports. In his remarks, he cited Britain’s technical capacity and innovative spirit and Qatar’s historic push to diversify into knowledge sectors as a strong foundation for the close trade relationship between the two countries.
“As the knowledge-based company responsible for developing the microwave oven and Harrier jump jet, BAE Systems has forged a strong bond with Qatar as the nation makes historic investments and progress toward its vision for the future,” said Garwood. “Our mutual interest and drive toward an inspired, knowledge-based economy has been the basis for the strong partnership we enjoy with Qatar and throughout the region. With respect to driving U.K. exports overseas, the importance of cultivating the right partnerships cannot be overstated. I am deeply grateful to QBBF and to Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Nicholas Hopton, for the opportunity to be among friends representing such a diverse span of British goods and services on this visit,” he added.
“QBBF, having been established in 1992 set out from Day 1 to help promote British businesses and products in Qatar,” added QBBF Chairman Emad Turkman MBE. “We have worked very hard to bring the business opportunities available in Qatar within easy reach of British businesses. Today’s event demonstrates our belief and commitment in partnerships with key British businesses to promote their products and services in this country. As the largest expat group in Qatar we have a wide membership, knowledge and experience to enable us to achieve our goals and helping to develop the close business and trade relationships which exist between Qatar and the United Kingdom,” concluded QBBF Chairman Emad Turkman MBE.
For BAE Systems, Garwood’s visit is the latest in an ongoing programme of industry and education-focused initiatives in Qatar. Previously, leading engineers from BAE Systems visited Texas A&M University at Qatar to meet the Dean, senior University faculty and students as part of the Dean’s Leadership Series. BAE Systems has also collaborated with Qatar Leadership Academy, providing cadets the opportunity to experience the excitement of science and engineering through workshops on fighter jets, unmanned air vehicles and BAE Systems’ Future Protected Vehicle Programme.
Last year, BAE Systems brought one of the world’s premier aerobatic teams, Britain’s famous Red Arrows, and the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet to Qatar for a public display over Doha’s Corniche as part of a wider Middle East tour.
