UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum met with a delegation of prominent media figures from Arab and international institutions who are currently visiting the country in celebration of the 42nd National Day of the United Arab Emirates. Key local media professionals attended the meeting held at the Armani Hotel – Burj Khalifa.
The meeting was attended by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Cabinet Affairs Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi and Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Also present at the high-profile gathering were Director of Dubai Ruler’s Office Lt. General Musabbah Rashid Al Fattan, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office Mona Ghanem Al Marri, sheikhs and top government officials.
Sheikh Mohammed touched on a number of important topics in his conversation with UAE’s guests with a special focus on the UAE National Day and importance of the anniversary of the union for the people of the UAE. He also discussed UAE’s accomplishment in winning the hosting bid of World Expo 2020 and what positive implications it would have on the region and the world.
Welcoming UAE’s guests of top media officials and local media figures, Sheikh Mohammed emphasised the essential role media plays as means of expressing the aspirations of people and their hopes of positive development.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that celebrating the 42nd National Day of the UAE has taken an exceptionally new dimension with UAE winning the bid to host Expo 2020. Sheikh Mohammed noted the importance of the National Day to the people of the emirates as it marks an important turning point in the history of the country and a start to a comprehensive fast-paced development march fuelled by the aspirations of the Emirati people; a march that has withstood the test of time and weathered tough challenges on its ongoing journey to the future.
Speaking on winning the bid to host World Expo 2020 in Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed attributed this accomplishment to the wise leadership of the UAE manifested in President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the constant follow-up of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
“We have diligently worked round-the-clock to guarantee that UAE’s bid rises to the level of our aspirations and we thank Allah for the results. Today, the implementation of our vision for Expo 2020 has just begun. The next phase of accomplishment lies ahead. We seek a future were peace and prosperity prevail… and we will continue to work to achieve that,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
On the sound foreign policy of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed said: “The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has laid the pillars of strong and amicable relations with different countries of the world based on trust, mutual respect. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed is following the same wise approach with support from Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed. Today, the UAE enjoys very strong relations with almost all countries of the world.”
Sheikh Mohammed went on to praise the role and efforts exerted by the Foreign Ministry, led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in gathering international support for Dubai’s bid. His Highness noted that fine UAE diplomacy was essential in ensuring a victory in the voting process.
Sheikh Mohammed considered winning the bid to host World Expo 2020 in Dubai as a testament of international respect and trust the UAE enjoys abroad. As the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) announced that Dubai’s bid received a total of 116 votes after the third and final round, it was a success of UAE’s foreign relations team who have worked hard to gather support for the event.
Moreover, Sheikh Mohammed asserted that UAE’s achievement is a gain for the whole region and the world as it brings a global event of this magnitude to the doorsteps of a vast geographical area inhabited by approximately two billion people. It also opens opportunities and channels for the exchange of ideas and visions as well as innovative solutions for the benefit of humanity in general.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed praised the positive stance by all Arab and foreign countries that have supported the UAE in this regard. He also expressed appreciation to establishments and individuals from within and outside the UAE for their enthusiastic support, and greeted all departments, institutions and government bodies as well as private sector entities and the UAE community in general for their direct support stressing that they are all partners in success.
Yes to peace… No to arms
Answering a question regarding UAE’s commitment to spreading peace for the betterment of the peoples of the world, Sheikh Mohammed asserted that “We do not want arms… We want peace to prevail.” “My brother Mohammed bin Zayed has underlined that sound international relations are more important than cannons and rockets. This is a wise and peaceful approach. Peace is the only path that guarantees the prosperity of mankind,” His Highness added.
Commenting on the instability that still affects parts of the Arab world, Sheikh Mohammed said: “Keeping a positive spirit and working to attain peace and development will help surpass challenges. We truly wish that peace and prosperity will take over.”

At the meeting, UAE Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed asserted that the prosperity of the citizens tops the priority list of the wise leadership of the UAE.
