The Medical Education Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently held in Doha a three-day symposium for obstetricians and gynecologists in collaboration with the Royal Society of Medicine for Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the British Maternal & Fetal Medicine Society.

The symposium was delivered by six senior specialists in obstetrics and gynecology at the Royal Society of Medicine and was attended by nearly 140 HMC physicians and 15 participants from other countries including Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Sweden.

High-risk pregnancy issues, complications and global maternal fatalities were key topics that were discussed during the three-day event. The symposium also addressed pregnancies associated with blood disease, hepatitis, and blood clot disorders.

Six workshops on preeclampsia in pregnancy, bleeding and emergencies were also held. In addition, participants at the symposium discussed associated pregnancy issues including digestive problems, heart and endocrine, thyroid problems, kidney and respiratory system diseases and how to treat a pregnant woman in maternal critical care unit.

“The symposium was very beneficial for obstetricians and gynecologists and Hamad Medical Corporation has decided to hold a similar conference every three or five years,” said Dr. Najat Khenyab, a senior consultant at the Women’s Hospital.

“Women’s Hospital is continually working towards providing women with best care and is currently in the process of establishing specialized antenatal clinics for at-risk pregnancies,” added Dr. Khenyab.
“The number of patients visiting the Women’s Hospital in Doha with at-risk pregnancies is increasing due to the high prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, hereditary diseases and multiple pregnancies,” added Dr. Khenyab.

“We have already begun work in this area with our diabetes clinic which includes an endocrinologist, a gynecologist and a nurse.”
