BMW turns to renewables to power plants, boost profits
- Germany: Wednesday, February 20 - 2013 at 06:25
BMW Group has said it is to harness winds in eastern Germany to secure power and boost profits, as costs rise due to Germany's €550bn ($740bn) shift away from nuclear energy, Bloomberg has reported. Four wind turbine towers will soon supply almost a quarter of the power used at BMW's Leipzig plant, where the carmaker builds the X1 SUV and soon the i3, its first electric car. The automaker seeks to eventually get all its power from renewables, compared with 28% in 2011, both to cut its carbon output and benefit from falling prices for wind and solar energy.
