  • PRESS RELEASE

Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company advancing the development, commercialization and deployment of clean energy. The agreement was signed by His Excellency Mohamed Rashed Al Hameli, General Manager, Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, and Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO, Masdar.

As a key outcome of the agreement, CWM and Masdar will host a first-of-its-kind EcoWaste-Exhibition during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2014.

The MoU also mandates the Center of Waste Management to collaborate with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology on research and development initiatives while offering student scholarship programmes that promote an understanding and development of the sector. The outcomes of the research will be directed towards the support of future projects.

Additionally, the agreement will lead to the establishment of a clean Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Masdar City. As the first-of-its-kind energy efficient recycling plant in the UAE, the MRF will significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions and the fuel consumption of CWM's collection fleet.

His Excellency Mohamed Rashed Al Hameli, said, "We, at the Center of Waste Management, are glad to join hands with Masdar, the leading initiative in the fields of renewable energy and clean technology worldwide. The comprehensive agreement will lay the foundation for fruitful developments that support the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030."

"The agreement reiterates the Center's commitment to collaborating with relevant authorities to seed the culture of sustainability that prioritizes practices such as the reduction of waste production, reuse and recycle," he added.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said, "Masdar's collaboration with the Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi illustrates our goal of advancing sustainable technologies to drive economic growth through human capacity building and commercially driven ventures. We are very proud of this partnership with CWM and look forward to bringing several projects to fruition in collaboration with government entities, the private sector and other stakeholders."

The joint collaboration between the Center of Waste Management and Masdar is expected to further support sustainable practices, as well as enhance the economic results of existing projects and drive the effective management of waste in the emirate. Additionally, the initiatives will result in significant job creation, bringing best-in-class technology to Abu Dhabi and driving the local waste recovery industry.

Established in December 2008, the Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi is the lead agency responsible for controlling and coordinating waste management activities across the emirate. This is achieved through the implementation of a waste management strategy and comprehensive service delivery required for establishing a full cycle integrated waste management system.
