Computerlinks fined $2.8m over Syria deal

Dubai-based Computerlinks has agreed to pay a $2.8m civil penalty for shipping embargoed US devices to the Syrian government to monitor and control internet traffic, Reuters has reported. The US Department of Commerce (USDC) said the firm sold $1.4m worth of devices made by California-based Blue Coat Systems Inc. to the Syrian Telecoms Establishment, which controls the country's access to the internet, in three separate transactions between about October 2010 and May 2011. The distributor falsely claimed to Blue Coat that the products were being shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the agreement with the USDC.
