  • PRESS RELEASE

The Dubai Health Authority recently started a clinic for immunocomprised patients at its Al Mizhar primary healthcare centre.

A person who has an immunodeficiency of any kind is said to be immunocompromised.

Dr.Fatma Sultan AlOlama, Head of Child Health Care Unit, Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA, said: "An immunocompromised person may be particularly vulnerable to infections and special care is needed to ensure they build their immunity over a period of time. The dedicated clinic has been initiated to ensure we closely monitor these patients and provide them with necessary treatment."

Al Olama, added: "Immunocompromised patients are prone to developing infections and complications. They are a unique group with special issues regarding immunization. Primary healthcare professionals have to work closely with these patients to decide whether and when immunization might be appropriate. Cases of immunocomprised individuals include those who are thalassemic and have recently undergone any kind of bone marrow transplant, patients suffering from leukemia or other forms of cancer, patients undergoing chemotherapy etc."

She added that the centre sees patients from all Emirates and that the clinic takes place on the first Wednesday of every month.
