  • PRESS RELEASE

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), the government authority charged with regulating, coordinating and supervising all aspects of the maritime sector in Dubai, has announced that Mohammad Al Bastaki, DMCA's Director of Maritime Operations, recently attended the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Cruise Ship National Center of Expertise Resident Training programme held in United States of America.

Mohammad's participation was part of the Dubai Cruise Ship Task Force's strong focus in 2013 on fire safety and the establishment in Dubai of a Cruise Center of Operational Safety and Environmental Excellence.

Considered the "finishing school" for Passenger Vessel Inspectors, the USCG resident training aims to broaden and deepen the participants' understanding of and competency in Passenger Vessel Examinations/Inspections. The training course covered the technical and regulatory concepts on standards applicable to foreign passenger vessels, and is designed to enhance the decision-making skills of participants while evaluating a vessel's compliance with international and domestic safety, security and environmental standards.

Mohammad Al Bastaki said, "The specialised training helped us become more aware of the different factors that impact the vessel's safety, including the crew's performance and guest demographics, which are critical in making informed decisions on matters concerning safety, security and commercial viability. Moreover, we are trained to see the forest for the trees in taking a more holistic approach in fulfilling our core duties as Passenger Vessel Inspectors. This is certainly an important initiative that sustains the continuing thrust of Dubai Maritime City Authority to establish Dubai as a premier maritime hub in the Middle East."
