Dubai SME closes 2012 training calendar on high note

Dubai SME, the agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED) mandated to develop the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, has rounded another successful year of capability development initiatives, having brought together over 850 entrepreneurs and SME owners in 18 training programmes during the last 12 months.

The training programmes, designed based on the requests and feedback from the entrepreneurs and Dubai SME members, covered a range of topics from efficient business management to communicating effectively with the different stakeholders.

The trainers included leading corporate trainers and management consultants in the UAE and the programmes attracted a large number of UAE nationals.

"The SME environment in Dubai and the UAE in general gained critical momentum in 2012 The training programmes rolled out by Dubai SME in 2012 were successful in inspiring entrepreneurial talent and enhancing entrepreneurial skills, especially among UAE nationals within and outside Dubai," said Abdul Baset Al Janahi, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai SME.

Farid Karmostaji, Director of Entrepreneur Development Division of Dubai SME, said, "The areas covered in the 2012 training calendar included social media, facebook for SMEs, project management, SME marketing tools, sales techniques, business etiquette, non-verbal communication, power of customer service, business writing, and Arabic correspondence. Each of these programmes included two workshops and involved practical techniques such as brainstorming and role plays."

"We are encouraged by the level of response to our programmes. Some of our members have indicated they will conduct similar programmes for their employees. We plan to organise more training programmes next year to cover new topics such as mind mapping and preparation of tenders and contracts," said Rania Sheir, senior Executive, Capability Development Department, Dubai SME.

The training programmes are a strategic component of Dubai SME's focus on enabling entrepreneurs and SMEs to learn best practices and grow into bigger and sustainable enterprises. Dubai SME evaluated the knowledge levels and skill gaps within the entrepreneur community before selecting the training programmes and trainers.

Trainers who led the various straining programmes in 2012 included Anas Abu-Hamam, Managing Director & Co-Founder of Platinum CPD, Dr. Mutasem Al Titi, renowned Body Language and Non-Verbal Communication expert; and Omran Zbeida, Co-Founder and Programme Development Director of Platinum CPD.
