Egypt says railway network needs over $71m in upgrades

Egyptian transportation minister Hatem Abdel-Latif has said the country's old railway system requires an estimated EGP170m ($25.7m) for spare parts and maintenance, while the necessary upgrade of train locomotives would require some EGP300m ($45.5m), Ahram has reported. Some 3,300 train carriages are no longer fit for use, the minister told the Shura Council, noting Egypt had tentatively agreed to buy 221 new train carriages and had plans to purchase a further 336.
