Egypt to spend EGP835m on 'urgent' railway network overhaul

Egyptian planning minister Ashraf El-Arabi has announced a decision by the cabinet to allocate EGP835m in the 2012-2013 budget for the repair of the country's battered railway system, Mena has reported. The funds, required to implement an "urgent" plan for the maintenance and development of the Egyptian railway would involve repairing and automating railroad crossings, purchasing spare parts for vehicles, control and safety mechanisms, air-conditioned carriages and second-class carriages.
