Emirates wants 30 more superjumbos for new routes
- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, January 08 - 2013 at 04:55
Emirates Airline has said around 30 more Airbus SAS A380 superjumbos may be needed to expand its network, which has been constrained by the lack of landing slots and space at its Dubai base, Bloomberg has reported. The carrier is studying "ways and means" to increase that cap on capacity for the A380, the world's biggest commercial jet, said Emirates president Tim Clark. Curfews in destination airports and limits on airspace in the UAE are the main constraints on lifting its current order of 90 aircraft to 120, Clark said. The carrier is also looking at whether it can fly the superjumbos to the US destinations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, beyond the limits of the aircraft's original design, by making use of new, lighter variants of the plane and cutting back on-board water usage, he said.
