EU offers Egypt €5bn in grants

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has said the European Union and other financial institutions had offered Egypt over €5bn ($6.5bn) to support the country's democratic transition, Reuters has reported. "I welcome therefore the fact that important discussions with the IMF are continuing," he said after talks with Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi. The sum includes "grants, concessional loans and loans for a period of 2012 and 2013 to support Egypt's democratic transition," Rompuy told reporters.
