Total Quality Management

Total Quality management (TQM) has been recognized as a successful management process in the Construction industry to help raise quality and productivity. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a project management technique or strategy that is implemented to assure that an awareness of quality is embedded in all phases of the project from conception to completion. Although there are many applied definitions of total quality management, the basic essence of TQM involves the elements of continuous improvement, a people orientation, quantitative methods, and a focus on customer satisfaction.

TQM is the application of quantitative methods and human resources to improve the material services supplied to an organization.

►Objectives:
The aim of this course is to examine how TQM can be applied more actively in the construction industry. It seeks to assist contractors in identifying the steps necessary for the implementation of TQM by:

- Addressing the issue of applying TQM in the construction industry
- Examining possible step for restructuring an organization for TQM
- Proposing an implementation framework for TQM
- Studying the application of quantitative methods.

All companies, in the construction field, need to focus on understanding and responding to customer needs. Total quality management, when adequately and successfully implemented, enables companies to serve their customers better and gain competitive advantage in the market place. The objective of this course is to prepare prospective project managers for playing a leading role in planning for and implementing total quality management.
