Profile and Background
Jordan Telecom is the leading provider of telecommunications services in Jordan. Apart from being the sole fixed-line telephone service provider in the country, JTel owns MobileCom, GlobalOne, and E-dimension.
MobileCom is a wholly-owned subsidiary and one of two mobile telecommunications providers in the country. The 2 remaining subsidiaries provide internet, data and related services to residential and business customers.
Jordan Telecom was established in 1971 as a state-owned monopoly provider of telecommunications services. In 1997 the company was incorporated by the Jordanian government as a wholly owned public limited company as part of a privatization initiative.
In 2000, the government sold 40% of JTel to JITCO, and entered into an agreement with a subsidiary of France Telecom to manage operations for 5 years. A further 8% was sold to the Social Security Company.
The IPO of Jordan Telecom in October 2002 offered 37.5 m shares, or 11% of the company to the public.
